ABOUT ME

Hi hi! My name is Elaine Woo Hom, a Northern California based portrait photographer. I've been living in the Bay area for 3 years now and loving Karl the fog. We adopted two kitties named Sam & Frodo. You can find me at a plant nursery or baking up a storm of mochi muffins. My MBTI is ESFJ.

We found a photographer that's patient and easy-going, traits that are very important since kids can be so unpredictable! She took the time to play with them and get to know them. At the end of the session, my 3.5 year old said, "I don't want you to go! Stay!" -AJ

MY STYLE & APPROACH

I am so happy that my style resonated with you and you have booked a session with me!  I want you to know that you choosing me as your photographer means the world to me. I know how valuable your time and investment are, so I promise to give you a positive, fun, and relaxed experience that will result in images that you will cherish forever! Most families say they are surprised at how well I capture the essence of their family and chill my sessions are. Take a look at the info below. My hope is that you will be as prepared as you can for your session. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to shoot me an email. I can't wait to capture your family!

"She was incredible - she showed up super early, helped us find the location, and she was SO SO GOOD WITH MY BABY AND DOG.  Like, serious dog/baby whisperer.  The best part?  She sent our pics to us FIVE DAYS AFTER OUR SHOOT.  We got hella Christmas cards, and honestly -- she turned our awkward family time into super cute photos.  I can not recommend Elaine enough.  She is THE BEST!  If you're able to book her -- DO IT, now!!" -MK

HOW I RUN MY SESSIONS

My portrait photography can be described as documentary-style. I LOVE using natural light and enhancing colors that are already in the shot. I do not bring large light stands or set up multiple flashes for that studio look. Studio shoots are great, but that is not my approach. We will most likely be meeting at your home or outside. I enjoy going to people’s homes and shooting them in their natural environment. Small children tend to feel much more comfortable with in-home shoots.

I am confident that I will be able to capture your raw self. Through photo editing, I enhance the beauty and emotion that was captured. The vibe of my shoots are cozy, intimate, sweet, and raw.

I will help you feel comfortable behind the camera and pose as necessary.  I want my clients to feel like they are on a heartwarming date and have the reassurance that there is a photographer capturing all those sweet moments. I love fostering quality relationships with my clients and take pride in the amount of time and effort I pour into the final product.

I select my locations and time of our session based on light because I feel like the location very much adds to the overall story.

I am never going to ask you to be anything but yourselves!  More often than not, moms are super nervous about whether or not their child/children are going to cooperate during the photo session. But here is the thing, I want your child to come as they are!  I am flexible and adaptable. I also want your child to have a fun time.

"She made the shoot feel so fun and like an adventurous date for the two of us. She helped us with posing and we didn't feel or look awkward at all. It was such a blast! She also sent us a couple of preview photos right away, which was even better. 10/10 would recommend booking Elaine. Check out these photos, they speak for themselves how talented she is!" -AJ

PREPPING FOR YOUR SESSION

Via e-mail, we will discuss location selection, wardrobe selection, and answer any questions you have. Custom photography is unique because it not only captures what you look like at a certain point in time, it captures who you are. I aim to capture honest photos of your family and children. The goal is not to get a stiff and posed shot with everyone looking at the camera, but to capture the true essence of your family. Here are a few tips and answers to my frequently asked questions to help you prepare for your session with me.

Location: Together, we will decide on the best location for your photos. I have many locations that I love to shoot regularly but I am always open to new locations as well. You should choose a location that fits your style and personality. I can help you along with this decision and send you my Bay Area Locations list that shows different locations.

Time: For outdoor shoots, we will begin either in the early morning or in the evening. The light is typically too harsh midday. If your children are up for it, shooting one to two hours before sunset provides gorgeous light and atmosphere.  It is my favorite time of the day to shoot!  Many families tell me that they simply have the kids take a late nap or have some downtime prior to their evening session.

Length Of Session: The good news is, I am super fast!  My family portrait sessions rarely last more than an hour.  Don't worry, I can easily get a diverse and adequate gallery in a short amount of time. So don’t worry about the kids being fussy or running all over the place. I can definitely capture all that we need.

What To Wear: Wardrobe should be comfortable and reflect who you are. I do not recommend matching but rather coordinating.  You will also want to stay away from large logos or graphics as they are distracting and can date a photograph.  I am happy to consult you directly on the wardrobe and will be happy to give advice if you want to text me some pictures of the outfits you are thinking about.

Props: I might bring a blanket, but for the most part I do not use props during my sessions. I do ask families to bring snacks and toys that make noises. I use the toys to make the kids look at the camera if needed.

Your Children: Just a few things to consider on getting off on the right foot - have you child/children well fed before your session, possibly adjust nap time if necessary, dress them appropriately and tell them you are all coming to meet a friend of yours who will be taking pictures of you having fun together.  Setting the mood ahead of time will help things go smoothly with little ones!  If meltdowns happen, I have found it is best if we just give the children time to relax and try to capture their natural self. Don't worry if your child is running about and active, most of the images you see of young children on my site were captured while the child or toddler was busy playing and exploring. To get the family shots, I usually direct the adults to simply "be" with the child, or hold the child and we go from there.  I try to incorporate lots of snuggles, games and fun so that we keep things moving, especially for toddlers!

Please arrive on time or be ready to start on time: Remember, your session is scheduled according to light.  It is important that we start on time.  Please plan for traffic or parking constraints.  It's best to arrive early.

"Elaine is so amazing at what she does! She was even willing to wake up at sunrise to get the perfect shots! She takes her time getting the right angles, candid shots, and any poses we wanted to do! I'd definitely recommend her for your engagement photos! She's a pro who knows what she's doing!" -AT

AFTER YOUR SESSION

How long does it take to get my gallery?

I pride myself in quick turnaround time.  No one wants to wait for months to see the photos from their gallery.  You will receive a dropbox link to your photos. I aim to have family photos done within 2 weeks and engagements 5 weeks.
